The first ever successful IVF embryo transfer could be set to save the white rhino from extinction, after scientists in Kenya performed the complicated procedure. Though the implantation was made in the rare southern white rhino, it is hoped that similar successful procedures will be able to be carried out on its even rarer cousin – the northern white rhino, of which there are only two infertile females left in the world!
The international research team’s implantation methods resulted in a successful pregnancy, raising hopes that the procedure, which has already been performed on humans, horses and cows can rescue this rarest of creatures from near total extinction.
